Leon Questions Babies

The Konkin Question:
If parenthood is considered the most profound experience a person can have, should everyone who is able to have children have them?
Why?
Here's What They're Saying...

- “My son is five years old. He was born on our sixth Wedding Anniversary. His birth-mom signed the papers right away so that we would have the chance to immediately bond with him. Being a mother is fabulous and a most incredible experience. That being said - it is the biggest sacrifice that I have ever made. It's not that my life has suddenly ceased to exit, it's just that another one had begun, and my life is now seen in the character of the boy that he is becoming. There is no fan-fare or applauding fans. 'Spontaneous' is a word rarely acted upon, unless you count the half-gallon of ice cream you downed when deciding to live on the wild side at 8:27 p.m. - since 9:00 is your new bedtime. There's vomit, and screaming, and other unmentionable horrors that come up on a daily basis. There's worry and illness, some worse than others. There are appointments, and responsibility, and volunteer work at the school. There are nights when no one sleeps, and if one person in the family gets ill - the rest are respectfully joining in at 3 a.m. Diapers cost $$, so do clothing, and here in the US of A - the cost of healthcare is a nightmare! There are Da-da's and giggles and hugs and love. First steps, words, and chunky thighs that only a baby can pull off. There is joy and bonding, unimaginable. There are tears and games and swimming and bubbles. I've always believed that sacrifice and trials are what shape us into becoming more refined, wise, and happy beings. So, I guess my answer would be - No. All those that can multiply should not. But we couldn't, and that didn't stop us. And just so you know - There is no 'ready' when it comes to being a parent. We were naive enough to believe that time + money + age = ready. Whether young or old, there's nothing that can prepare you for the soul-shaping adventure that is Parenthood”

- “No...in fact, I would have to say that more people should consider not have children, seeing that we are pretty over populated on this globe as it is. Plus, sometimes people have kids because they are conditioned to feel that they will not be 'whole' if they don't have them. This, of course, is simply not true. Alternatives to having children could be to give your time to organizations that help at-risk youth or help out single, less privileged mothers ... etc, etc. The baby mania - especially at my age - drives me a bits nuts, I must admit.”

- “To borrow from the book Eat,Pray, Love............Having kids is like getting a tattoo on your face! You better make darn sure it's something you really want! ”

- “No way. You shouldn't have 'em unless you want 'em. Kids are freaking tough to raise and deal with, so unless you're ready to prioritize their needs, don't bother. For example, as I type this, my almost 6 year old is trying to type in pbskids.org. I'm sure that the Holocaust was quite profound for those that survived it, but I don't think that everyone should go through that either. Granted, my opinion may be somewhat skewed to the jaded side right now due to the aforementioned six year old waking me at 7am on a Saturday. On the other hand, I think that people who would be great parents should have kids. That can be the greatest contribution that a person can make to society.”
