A Duet Dated February 6th 2006

One

Gone are the days
of planning cabbage patch kid
weddings
as front yard galas
Being the queen tire spinner
at recess
Or the only girl who could
catch the pop fly
Life, then, was mine for the taking
Until I left school
My days were filled with success
A+ A+ A+ A+ A+
I avenged the underdog
by fighting the bully
Dated older men from Regina
and started trends -
hoop earrings and aviator jackets
They didn't tell me
It would get harder
Harder and uglier and lonlier
Gone are the days
when I would have listened to them.

Two

Precisely what I want
I can not tell you
Precisely what is wrong
I do not know
Please do not think
I haven't asked these questions
The answer's absent
The numbness grows

Positive I am
that I'm not certain
Positive I am
that I am lost
Please do not think
I forgot that you are leaving
The answer's absent
and that's the cost

How could one live with this unhappiness?
Pack your bags and go.
I'd leave me, too, if I were able
Precisely why I can't, I do not know.
